One of the best vodkas on the planet!

Posted by Kyle Heon Sun, 08 Jan 2006 09:48:00 GMT

For Christmas my in-laws helped me stock my bar. One of the items they got me is some Ketel One Vodka which I knew was voted best vodka recently.

The other night I mixed one of my favorite drinks, a cape codder, with some Ketel One. This by far is without a doubt some of the best vodka I’ve ever had. It’s so smooth that you don’t even taste it in the drink, which is wonderful. It’s effects though are certainly felt shortly thereafter.

If you like vodka, you owe it to yourself to try Ketel One.

Happy Holidays to All!

Posted by Kyle Heon Fri, 23 Dec 2005 09:04:00 GMT

It’s been an awful long time since I last updated and now is as good a time as any to do so. I’ve been super busy with work and preparing for the holidays. On top of that we’ve all been battling a never-ending cold.

Didn’t want the holiday season to pass by without posting a quick note to say Happy Holidays to everyone.

I’m off on vacation this coming week which is cool, first time in years that I’ve been able to do that. I’m hoping to just enjoy the time off but my wife and I do plan on doing a few things during the time off, specifically hitting the theaters to see a few box-office hits. We hope to take the kids to see Narnia and later get out alone (kid-free) to see King Kong.

Minor Site Update

Posted by Kyle Heon Tue, 15 Nov 2005 00:44:00 GMT

Over the weekend I worked busily to release a small but significant update to this site. Instead of a scaling site it is now a fixed width website. I did this so that I could add some neato header imagery at the top.

You’ll currently only see one image but I hope to rip out a bunch of them and then build a simple randomizer so that you can get a different image with each page request.

Any imagery that you see is, and always will be, from my archives.

Also, on the gallery/photography side of things I have been working on a gallery add-on to Typo (not really an add-on that I’ll release to the public, at least I don’t intend to yet) but an add-on never-the-less. It’s coming along nicely I think but I’m trudging slowly as I work to learn Ruby and Rails as I do it.

This update was heavily tested in IE6.0 and Firefox 1.0.7. Should you experience any issues with this site please send a screenshot to me of the issue by clicking the “Contact Me” link in the footer.

Move Complete

Posted by Kyle Heon Sun, 09 Oct 2005 11:46:00 GMT

Well after many nights of struggling I have finally managed to get my site setup on Textdrive using lighttpd and FastCGI.

This new site looks much like it did last time only now it’s powered by Typo which is the premiere Rails blog engine.

Everything from my old Textpattern site should have been copied over, including the comments.

I have high hopes to really start in on some Rails development now that I have a host that supports it. My number one focus is going to actually build out my photography section. I don’t consider myself an expert photographer but I do feel I’m somewhere between novice and expert.

Oh My! It's been awhile...

Posted by kheon Wed, 14 Sep 2005 22:21:18 GMT

It’s been a bit too long since my last update. Maybe I should change the daily rant title to something like “unpredicatable rant”.

It’s been a very busy summer, specifically the past couple of weeks. Thankfully things are starting to slowly get back to normal.

I’m currently working on getting this site move to TextDrive where I can begin to do some Ruby on Rails development. In fact I’m currently working on setting up Typo as my new blogging engine.

After I get things migrated I hope to actually open a photography section, something I’d intended to do when I first bought this domain and just never had the time or the drive. Things have changed, over Labor Day weekend I purchased a sweet digital SLR. I snagged the Canon Digital Rebel XT which is awesome. I’m able to re-use all of my EOS EF lenses with it so I have quite the collection now. It takes absolutely amazing photos and no longer do I struggle to get picture of my children (who have this inability to sit long enough for a good photo).

Hopefully soon, like within a week or two, I’ll have everything moved and then I can begin to work on building my gallery add-on.

My little boy is a Black Belt!

Posted by kheon Sun, 24 Jul 2005 16:11:00 GMT

Yesterday my son tested for his black belt in Tae Kwon Do and what a test it was. We arrived at the Academy by 7:30AM in order to be ready for the testing at 8AM. The test ran for five hours with no breaks except the occasional water break (five minutes max).

My son is only seven years old. It was a very grueling test, as throughout the span of five hours they did 1000 pushups, 1000 situps, ran one mile and did about 2000 kicks. He broke five sets of boards, a 30-step form, a 30-second musical form that he had to create on his own and various memorization tests.

He was a champ too. It tested not only his strength and endurance but also his dedication, perseverance, and commitment. On more then one occassion my wife and I caught him fighting back tears; rightfully deserved tears but nevertheless he blinked them back and kept going. He made us very proud.

Seven years old and he’s a First Degree Black Belt. They call it a “Juniors” black belt but regardless he is considered a black belt and can now begin training as an adult, towards an “Adult” black belt and will begin classes with other black belts on Tuesday.

A huge congrats to him. I also owe my loving wife a big thanks. It was originally my idea to enroll my boy three years ago and she has been supportive throughout the entire process and is a huge reason he was as prepared as he was. Being an at home mom allowed her to work with him daily, something she has been doing now constantly for the past two months.

It's hot and it's been a bad day!

Posted by kheon Sat, 25 Jun 2005 14:58:00 GMT

Warning! This is a rant, just a general bad day rant.

Started today out pretty good, right up till about 10AM when I attempted to clean my glasses, at which point they snapped in half.

I’m unable to see without my glasses so I was a bit frantic. Decided to try putting in some contacts that I still had (same prescription), something I haven’t done in about 2 years. That was fun, took me about 15 minutes to get them in.

So then, about two hours later I decided to put some eye drops in to lubricate the lenses as my eyes felt dry. That was a mistake because either the lens in my right eye fell out while I did this or rolled up in the back of the eye, I don’t know which but either way I was unable to see out of my right eye.

I had my wife take me to the mall where there are two eye shops to see about fixing the frames but they couldn’t and they said they couldn’t reuse my lenses either because the weren’t bought at their store.

So, thankfully my new medical insurance threw in some vision care, which helped out but new frames, a set of anti-reflective lenses, and a 2-year warranty (against this kind of thing) ran me $170! The insurance paid either just under or just over half the total bill. That, quite frankly is ridiculous, I went with a fairly cheap set of frames too. Why oh why does everything cost so much?!

To top that all off, the temp here is a comfortable 97!

End of rant.

Fun with Ruby on Rails and other news

Posted by kheon Wed, 22 Jun 2005 21:10:00 GMT

Well, it’s been awhile since I last updated so I figured I’d update everyone (those few that actually visit this site) on what I have been up to lately.

Finally, after about two months of setup, my Linux system is finally at a point where I can start playing around with Ruby on Rails. For about the past week I have been doing just that. At first it was playing but then I decided to take all of the ASP (yeah, Active Server Pages) apps that we have where I work and port them to Rails.

This process has been pretty fun. Instead of just ripping through and getting it down I’ve decided to take a slow, methodical approach and actually learn the “Rails” way of doing things. Thankfully this has still be a pretty fast moving process. I’ve had a few hiccups along the way but nothing all that major, the Rails framework really is all about getting things done quickly and effeciently.

I have been eagerly following all the Ruby/Rails blogs I know of and after having some dissatisfying experiences with a commercial content management system (CMS) that we are implementing at work I’ve been really thinking about writing one myself, however I know there is no way I could take on something like that by myself so I have joined the RailFrog project. Right now I’m just kind of sitting on the sidelines, listening as I am just learning how to do things in the world of Ruby and Rails plus it’s still very early in the project planning.

In other news, my daughter graduated preschool a few weeks back and can’t wait to start kindergarten in the fall. My son just finished up 1st grade. Also, in regards to my son, he is just a month shy of testing for his Black Belt in Taekwondo and he has improved considerably in the last month or so.

Today is my wife’s 30th. We threw her a surprise birthday party two weekends ago which was a lot of fun. My daughters birthday was yesterday which we celebrated last Saturday.

We have watched a ton of movies, I’ve just been too lazy to write up a review for any of them. Speaking of movies, damn there is just too many good movies in the theater. The wife and I want to get out and see Star Wars: Episode III, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, and Fantastic Four but that will be tough, too many movies too close together. We need a sitter every weekend for a month which just isn’t realistic.

I won again!

Posted by kheon Thu, 26 May 2005 19:20:00 GMT

Sheesh, I seem to have luck winning raffles that my company puts on. Yesterday they raffled off four photo printers that they had (brand new). The deal was you stick a business card into the box and that it.

I was gone when they did the drawing but this morning I arrived at work to find a Dell box sitting in my seat.

It’s a Dell Photo Printer 720 which isn’t top of the line but hell, it’s free. I have an Epson Photo Stylus 820 that I bought a few years back and don’t care much for the photo printing quality, going to give this one a whirl and see how it fairs.

Two years ago, at our company Christmas party we did the same thing, only that time the raffle was for a $1,000 Pioneer Tivo DVR/DVD Recorder. That was sweet, and it’s in use every day.

Props to the company I work for.

Tour de Cure

Posted by kheon Thu, 26 May 2005 19:10:33 GMT

A big thanks to my little brother who is signed up to ride in the Tour de Cure, a fundraiser to support diabetes research. I’ve been diabetic now for 17 years and would love to see a cure found.

Once more, a big thanks.

The ride is on June 5th. If you would like to donate swing on over here and if you do thanks a lot!
