Both my wife and daughter were sick through the weekend so we didn’t get to watch to many movies. What we did watch however is detailed below:
Without a Paddle is a comedy about three friends who embark on a childhood journey to find a lost treasure. My wife and found this one funny on many occassions. If you are in the mood for a good laugh, give this one a shot. Giving this one 3.75 stars.
Unstoppable was a movie that I’ve had on the queue now for awhile and wasn’t sure what to expect. It star Wesley Snipes and it was actually pretty good. I didn’t expect all that much, which probably helped. Decent story and fair action. This one gets 3.5 stars.

Only managed to get through a couple movies this weekend, both of them falling in the horror/suspense genre.
The Forgotten was one I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t sure what sort of movie it was going into it, I just knew that it would be a bit of a thriller. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but I must say that how everything turned out was very much a surprise. It was a bit suspenseful but nothing too bad, certainly not on the level of movies like The Ring and Thirteen Ghosts (two movies that were, in my opinion, scary as hell). This one gets 4 stars.
The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar, I knew going in was going to be a horror film but what I didn’t know was that it was based on a the famous Japanese horror film Ju-On. Plenty of tense moments throughout pretty much the entire film. Great use of music to highten the effect. If you are in the mood for a good old fashion scare-fest this is definetly recommended (be sure to watch it in the dark). This one gets 4.25 stars.

We picked this one up for the kids as a Valentines gift. There is quite the cast voicing this movie, including Will Smith, Jack Black, Robert DeNiro, Renee Zellweger, Angelina Jolie and Martin Scorsese.
As with nearly every kids movie that is released these days this one is loaded with little things for the parents. It’s always fun to try and pick them out. I’m sure I missed a lot of them too but knowing my kids this one will be watched repeatedly for many months.
The animation and audio was top-notch, as expected. Oscar (Will Smith) is simply hilarious. Will Smith brought decent humor to this character.
It is so amazing how well the animators theses days can model the characters so closely to the people that are voicing them. It’s just a testament of how well movie technology has evolved.
This one gets a whole-hearted 4.5 stars. If you have kids you definetly should check this one out.

This isn’t the only movie we have for this weekend but so far it is the only one we’ve had a chance to watch. Picked up Shark Tale for the kids and we’ll be watching that sometime tonight probably, a review will follow.
As for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, this is a movie I’ve been excited about since I read a feature on it in Wired Magazine about a year ago, before it hit the movie theatres. Every screen of this movie was assembled on a computer. From a technology standpoint it is simply amazing. The acting was filmed on a blue (or green, or whatever color) screen and then digitally positioned into the scene.
As for the story and plot I wasn’t really familiar with it but it wasn’t half bad. The reviews I’ve read didn’t care much for it but I definetly enjoyed this movie.
Overall I give this a four star rating. As I said before, I enjoyed this one.

Managed to tear through four new movies this past weekend. Always nice to have some decent movies to watch come Friday evening.
Cellular: I didn’t expect much from this one. For me this was pretty much Phone Booth on a cell phone with a little twist. The acting wasn’t great but not bad either. It’s worth watching. I’m giving this one 3.5 stars.
Aliens vs Predator: This movie surprised me. I was excited about it but wasn’t sure how it would turn out as a movie. I’ve been told that it works well as a comic so I was hopefull. All in all it wasn’t all that bad. The special effects and surround were really cool. The acting wasn’t Oscar worthy but I didn’t expect that anyways. Even my wife enjoyed this one. This one gets 4.25 stars.
Dawn of the Dead: I’ve only had this from Netflix now for about three weeks. Finally got a chance to watch it while the family was out of the house. I expected a lot of gore from what I’d read and it definetly lived up to the reviews. Nothing really new here in terms of plot for a zombie movie. Pretty decent effects and lots of tense moments. Have to give this one 3.75 stars.
The Terminal: I was not all that excited about seeing this because I’d heard it was a bit boring. Surprisingly though I found myself really liking this movie. Tom Hanks is such a great actor that you can’t help but like [most] everything he does. Going to go with a 4 star rating on this one.

The wife and I watched Catwoman earlier this week when it came in the mail. I didn’t really go in with high expectations, good thing because it wasn’t really that great.
Sure, some nice eye candy from time to time but there was just something missing from the movie. The action sequences seemed dull to me. They tried hard to make them really action packed and choreographed but they just seemed to fall a bit short.
This one gets 3.5 stars.

My wife and I had our usual array of new movies available to watch this weekend. Here’s what we watched and what I thought.
Wimbledon – Believe it or not, Wimbeldon was not all that bad. It is of course a love story and at times my wife and I felt that Paul Bettany’s character was a bit too old to be having a relationship with Kirsten Dunst but in the end the movie was still pretty good. This one receives 3.75 stars.
Elf – I haven’t seen many of Will Ferrell’s movies so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with Elf. There are some hilarious moments and some not so. If you are a fan I’m sure it’s one of your favorites but I just wasn’t as impressed as I would have liked. I give this one 3 stars.
Wicker Park – My wife and I went in with low expectations for this one just because I’d heard that it started out good and then kind of trailed off till the end. We definetly agree with that statement. It’s your classic love story where the two constantly just miss each other. It’s incredibly frustrating at times, you just want to reach into the tv and smack them silly. Again, I’ll give this one a 3.75 star rating.
We still have Dawn of the Dead but that’s one my wife isn’t all excited about seeing so I need to find a time to watch it when the family isn’t around.

The holiday messed things up this past week because for once in quite sometime my wife and I didn’t have any movies to watch this weekend. Oh well, there’s always next weekend (considering there’s no football).

Now that I’m finally blogging here at kyleheon.com I figured it would be nice to post mini movie reviews of the movies my wife and I watch over the week[end] seeing as how we blow through so many a month (courtesy of Netflix).
This weekend we managed to land a few of the bigger titles released recently. Here is how things played out.
Open Water – The beginning of this movie had some really cheesy acting and it looked like a low budget film. The saying that it is Jaws meets Blair Witch Project is pretty accurate. Once things get going though it’s pretty intense. There was a lot of great camera use to highten the intensity while the two were trapped out at sea. It is not overly gory either which I was somewhat expecting. I give this a 3.5 star rating.
King Arthur – This version of the King Arthur story is considerably different then that of Excalibur or The First Knight (a couple of my favorites). It was a much more brutal portrayal but in the end it was an enjoyable film. I give this one a 4 star rating.
Hero – As for Hero this was a incredible movie. My wife and I really liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and this movie is very similar. We watched the subtiltled version (as always) because we struggle with dubbed versions because the voices never match up with the lips and it’s frustrating to watch. It was not at all hard to read the subtitles while still enjoying the movie as most of the dialogue scenes were pretty motionless and there was little to no dialogue during the action scenes. You don’t miss anything. This one gets a 5 star rating.
Resident Evil: Apocolypse – As far as video game movies go this one is not half-bad. Overall the monster portrayal seems pretty close to that of the game series, although I have fairly limited experience with the series, knowing the storyline only. There is one ongoing item that was pretty lame but I will not spoil that here. This one gets 4 stars.
