Upgraded to the new Canon Rebel XSi, Old Canon Rebel up for Sale!

Posted by Kyle Heon Sun, 13 Apr 2008 10:44:00 GMT

Since Canon announced the new Rebel XSi I have been seriously considering the upgrade from my now 2-3 year old Rebel XT. The XT has served me quite well and is still an awesome camera, for the price (especially now, as it’s being phased out, you can get it for pretty cheap).

The XSi offered numerous upgrades over the XT and with a recent bonus check from my employer, I felt it was not only in the cards, but worth it.

Earlier this week B&H notified me that they had stock in the new Canon model and so I started watching the local Best Buy. Friday, after work I stopped back in and patiently waited for a sales associate to free up to ask when they would be getting some. He looked it up in his computer and low and behold, they had stock. He was able to track down one—the kit, which is what I wanted (for the upgraded 18-55mm IS lens).

I sadly have not been able to really play around with it but I can say that it is a pretty cool camera and I suspect I’ll be learning all the new features it offers in the coming months. With spring/summer right around the corner, I’m hoping to get some good photos, so watch this space and my flickr space.

So, as the title suggests, my old Rebel XT is up for sale. I haven’t listed it on eBay or anything like that yet, just spreading the word quietly for right now. If you are interested, contact me using the link in the footer. Use a subject line similar to “Interested in your Rebel XT”.

I’m asking $350 for the kit, plus a few other goodies:

I also have an older 28-80mm lens that works perfectly with the Rebel XT which I acquired during my film SLR days. If you are interested in this, let me know as I’m willing to add it to the mix for a small additional amount.

I expect that shipping this bundle will probably run about $15 via UPS Ground, but we can certainly discuss total cost via email if necessary.

Little Peter Cottontail

Posted by Kyle Heon Sat, 25 Aug 2007 00:09:00 GMT

The other night after getting home from work the kids came rushing in to tell me to get my camera, that there was a bunny in the back yard. So I grabbed my camera w/my 75-300 lense and headed outside.

Sure enough, there he (not really sure if he really is a he) was sitting in the grass about 20 feet away. This little guy was really tiny, in fact the grass was taller then him when shot from a distance of 10-15 feet while laying on the ground.

Ultimately I had to approach slowly and kneel to get some good shots (due to the height of the grass). I only kept four out of the 131 I took but they all came out really good (I think). You can check them all out here.

This photo below is probably the cutest of them all.

Wings of Hope Air Show

Posted by Kyle Heon Fri, 24 Aug 2007 23:39:00 GMT

This past Sunday a bunch of us, including my son, spent the day at an air show not far from where I work (or live for that matter). It was a long tiring day but I was able to get lots of good shots. I filled 3gb of CF cards (363 photos total).

I then spent the last couple of days culling out the non-keepers and tweaking the rest. In the end I kept 81, some better then others.

Here are a few of my favorites. To view the entire set, swing over to my Flickr account.

I hope you enjoy this small glimpse and I really encourage you to swing over here to check out the rest of the photos.

New photos posted to Flickr

Posted by Kyle Heon Mon, 18 Jun 2007 23:52:00 GMT

I realize that it’s been quite a long time since I last posted something here so I figured now would be a really great time to highlight that while this blog has been quite, I haven’t been doing nothing.

For the past month or so I’ve been taking lots of photos, most of them I’ve pushed up to my Flickr account. If you are family or friends, let me know because I can add you as a friend or family contact so that you can see my private assets.

A few of my favorites are shown below:

Adobe Lightroom

Posted by Kyle Heon Wed, 07 Mar 2007 01:27:00 GMT

When Adobe announced that Photoshop Lightroom was going on sale, I pre-ordered (download version) and then waited [im]patiently for two or so weeks until they sent me my download link.

I’ve had it now since it was released and it’s an incredible piece of software. I’m in the process of re-organizing my photo categories (into collections) and restructuring my keyword tags. I will then begin to migrate all my photos from ACDSee Pro. Should anyone know of tools to import from ACDSee Pro into Lightroom, I’d appreciate a comment on this thread.

Because of the impressive RAW support in Lightroom, I’ve switched over to RAW almost exclusively. To ensure that I don’t run out of card storage I picked up a new 2GB 150x card from Calumet Photo.

My intention is to begin taking more and more photos. Early in February I picked up an incredible book by Scott Kelby which had so many simple tips and tricks to improve my photos. I whole heartily recommend this book to anyone with even a fleeting interest taking pictures.

Anniversary Bouquet

Posted by Kyle Heon Wed, 07 Mar 2007 00:16:00 GMT

On February 27th my wife and I celebrated our 8th anniversary. On the way home from work I picked up a bouquet of flowers for her, of which I took roughly 75 photos of. Here are some of the better one (via my flickr account).

If you like these (and I hope you do), you can find more flower photography here.

Wow! It's been awhile since I updated

Posted by Kyle Heon Sat, 11 Feb 2006 00:41:00 GMT

I know, I know; it’s been an awfully long time since I last updated this site. I apologize, it has been a very chaotic 2006 for the Heon family. Here is a very quick summary of things that have gone on:

  • My “little” brother had a sty in his eye, torqued his back, and totalled his car (all in the month of January).
  • My daughter busted herself up real bad falling on the jungle gym at school. She was out of school for over two weeks.
  • My son took a pencil in the eye at school. Thankfully that was just a scare, nothing was actually damaged.
  • My wife has been in and out of the hospital and doctors for various tests and procedures to find and stop some internal bleeding. Things have been found that had to be dealt with but thankfully, as of today everything is looking pretty good. We had quite the scare there as doctors tossed the word cancer around.
  • Then just the other day my grandmother was admitted to the hospital and is still there under observation. She is being treated for a slew of things but from what I have been told tonight she is feeling much better and is in much better spirits. My wife and I went over to the hospital last night to see her but she was asleep so we let her rest.

All that in under a month and a half.

In addition to all of that, the team I work with is 110% allocated for at least the next 6 weeks so I’ve been putting in some long hours to just stay afloat. If you live in the Southern New Hampshire area and happen to be looking for a development job please swing over here and submit an application. Tell them I sent you.

I sadly have not spent much time working on any Ruby on Rails development (a bit to my dismay too) and my camera has sat in the camera bag now for a few weeks. After we can get past all of the recently accrued medical bills I hope to pick up a copy of Photoshop CS2 so that I can begin shooting my pics in RAW format (at least I plan on trying it out).

At some point I hope to get back into development on this site. I’ve been promising for way to long to get a photography section up and running and sooner or later I will actually do so. Here’s hoping that time is soon.

What I got for Christmas!

Posted by Kyle Heon Thu, 29 Dec 2005 14:15:00 GMT

We had a really great Christmas Eve/Day here in the Heon household. On Christmas Eve my parents, brother, and his girlfriend swing over along with my in-laws and aunt. It’s always pretty fun, the kids always on overload.

Here’s the list (I think this is everything):

  • Liquor to stock my bar (Bombay Gin, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Ketel One Vodka, and some Baileys)
  • Xbox games (Forza Motorsport and Jade Empire)
  • DVDs (I-Robot, Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and the Mask of Zorro)
  • Taupe colored LL Bean Mocs (these are wonderful, I have a brown pair and wear them all the time)
  • Individual serving French Press (for tasty coffee)
  • Portable air compressor
  • Slingshot Camera Bag (the big one, this is great)
  • Cash (always a good gift)

I’m sure I forgot something, and if I did, I’m sorry to whomever gave the gift.

With the cash I ordered a bunch of photography equipment. I have been wanting to get a serious of must-have filters so I finally took the plunge and ordered them from B&H Photo Video the other day. After much reading and deliberation I decided to go with the Cokin A Filter System to get everything I needed/wanted with maximum creativity. I also ordered a new book from Amazon on photography.

The filters that I decided to go with this time include:

  • Circular Polarizer Glass Filter
  • Warming (81EF) Filter
  • Sunset 1 Filter
  • Grey Graduated G2 Resin Filter
  • Gradual Blue B2 Soft Filter

Yesterday we went shopping for new living room furniture. Hoping that today or tomorrow I’ll have my bonus check in hand and can head out to order our new furniture.

Also hoping to get out to see Narnia today with the kids and maybe swing out to see King Kong tomorrow or Saturday without the kids.

Minor Site Update

Posted by Kyle Heon Tue, 15 Nov 2005 00:44:00 GMT

Over the weekend I worked busily to release a small but significant update to this site. Instead of a scaling site it is now a fixed width website. I did this so that I could add some neato header imagery at the top.

You’ll currently only see one image but I hope to rip out a bunch of them and then build a simple randomizer so that you can get a different image with each page request.

Any imagery that you see is, and always will be, from my archives.

Also, on the gallery/photography side of things I have been working on a gallery add-on to Typo (not really an add-on that I’ll release to the public, at least I don’t intend to yet) but an add-on never-the-less. It’s coming along nicely I think but I’m trudging slowly as I work to learn Ruby and Rails as I do it.

This update was heavily tested in IE6.0 and Firefox 1.0.7. Should you experience any issues with this site please send a screenshot to me of the issue by clicking the “Contact Me” link in the footer.

Move Complete

Posted by Kyle Heon Sun, 09 Oct 2005 11:46:00 GMT

Well after many nights of struggling I have finally managed to get my site setup on Textdrive using lighttpd and FastCGI.

This new site looks much like it did last time only now it’s powered by Typo which is the premiere Rails blog engine.

Everything from my old Textpattern site should have been copied over, including the comments.

I have high hopes to really start in on some Rails development now that I have a host that supports it. My number one focus is going to actually build out my photography section. I don’t consider myself an expert photographer but I do feel I’m somewhere between novice and expert.
