More Then Meets The Eye

As part of a mini-vacation I took Thursday and Friday (July 5th and 6th) off to create an extra long weekend.

I’ve been saying for about 6 months now that when the Transformers movie hit the theaters that I’d be going. At first I was going to just take my son because I didn’t think my daughter would care to see it. Turns out she wanted to go too so the wife and I took them both on Thursday morning (a 9:30 showing—nice).

I went into this with pretty high expectations and I wasn’t disappointed. Typically I’m let down when I get this excited about a movie but not this time, this was a typical, blow everything up Michael Bay film. I think the team behind the transformations did an absolutely amazing job. There was only one scene in the entire film that I felt oozed “CGI” and I quickly dismissed it.

I personally feel this did my childhood favorite justice on the big screen. My daughter wanted us to go buy it on DVD, I had to explain to her (and my son) that it wasn’t on DVD yet and they were going to have to wait. I suspect it’ll be on DVD by the end of the summer, and you can bet we’ll be owning it the day it hits shelves.

This is definitely the summer blockbuster to run out and see. “We” give this one 4.5 stars.

V for Vendetta Moview Review

We were lucky enough last week to get V for Vendetta from Netflix on the day it came out. We watched it that night too. It was great. Hugo Weaving’s performance was brillant. Also starring the always lovable Natalie Portman.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this one other then knowing the cast. Turns out this is based on a graphic novel, one I’m going to seek out now that I’ve seen the film.

I’m going to give this game five stars.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Over the weekend the wife and I dropped the kids off with the grandparents and we went out to with my brother and his girlfriend to see the new Pirates of the Carribean movie. It was awesome. I’m not sure if I like it more then the first or not; I think they are about the same. The special effects were certainly cool but nothing you shouldn’t expect by now. If you enjoyed the first one you’ll certainly enjoy the sequel. Prepare yourself, it ends with quite the cliff-hanger.

Apparently Bruckheimer was filming both the second and third at the same time. I suspect the third movie to roll into theaters about this time next summer.

Movie Review: March of the Penguins

We watched March of the Penguins the other night as a family. While it’s a documentary I’d heard really good things about it and it was rated G so we decided to let the kids watch it. I wasn’t sure that it would captivate their interest but they were completely engaged from start to finish. I certainly recommend this movie, and give it 4.5 stars.

You will undoubtedly learn a lot about penguins. What these little creatures go through every year is incredible. It makes you realize that we have things pretty good compared to the other creatures on this planet.

Kung Fu Hustle

We watched Kung Fu Hustle this past weekend. I’d heard that it was both good and pretty funny. It is funny but in a very twisted way. It is subtitled but with all the action that isn’t really a big deal. This one gets four stars.

Fever Pitch (Red Sox Edition)

I picked up Fever Pitch (Red Sox Edition) yesterday while out doing some shopping and the wife and I watched it last night. Seeing as how I followed the amazing Red Sox season all last year it was nothing new but still, the movie was funny, and a great testament to how fanatical Red Sox fans can be.

Certainly going to give this one two thumbs up, and 4.5 stars.

Movie Reviews Update

I’ve been busy (and sick) lately so I haven’t had time to post my mini movie reviews lately. Here’s a bunch that we’ve watched recently. Sorry they will be really short today.

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid: I’m a sucker for cheesy movies like this and surprisingly it wasn’t half-bad. That’s not saying that the acting was award winning or anything but the story was actually a bit believable and the special effects pretty decent. This one gets 3.5 stars.

Taxi: I can’t think of anything that I’ve seen with Jimmy Fallon in it so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I knew this would be a bit comical. There wasn’t quite as much comedy as I’d expected but this was a pretty cool movie. Some nice street driving scenes as well not to mention some sweet looking rides. Four stars for this one.

Little Black Book: Rented this one more for the misses but I enjoyed it as well. Very surprising ending though. A decent film never the less. Going to give this one 4 stars.

Flight of the Phoenix: I really wanted this movie to be great but I can’t help but feel disappointed. I don’t know why, I think I expected too much maybe and given that I didn’t know what the storyline was all about I was kind of surprised. There were times when the special effects were cool but other then that I wasn’t really impressed. Only giving this one 3 stars.

Friday Night Lights: I was excited when I received the email from Netflix that this one was on it’s way. I’d heard that it was a great film. I’d have to agree. This one gets 4 stars.

Saw: I actually got my wife to watch this one with me. She hated it of course and I can’t say that I blame her, it was a very disturbing film and incredibly gruesome at times. Recommended only if you are in the mood for a good horror flick but not if you are trying to spend a quality evening with a significant other. Giving this one 3 stars.

I just received notification from Netflix that we’ll have these movies for the weekend: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, Garden State, Mean Creek so you can expect details about those shortly.

Movie Reviews: Mr. 3000 and Raise Your Voice

Couple of quick movie reviews to recap what we watched this weekend.

On Friday evening we watched Mr. 3000 with Bernie Mac. I was expecting something better then what it was but it was still fairly funny. Not the best comedy we’ve seen in recent memory but if you like Bernie Mac you probably will enjoy this. Giving this one a 3.25 rating.

Then this morning we watched Raise Your Voice with Hillary Duff. I think we enjoyed it more then the kids. My daughter, who I expected to enjoy it most lost interest about half way in. It’s a story about a young girl (Duff) who loses her brother and the struggle she goes through to overcome it with the help of music. This one gets a 4.0 rating.

Movie Review: City of God

This week I’ve dealt with a sick househould however the misses and I were able to watch a movie that came in last weekend. It’s a foreign film (yes, that means subtitles). The movie was City of God. To start out, here is the description stolen from Netflix:

Busca-Pe (Alexandre Rodrigues) lives in Cidade de Deus (City of God), a housing project reputed to be one of the most dangerous parts of otherwise magical Rio de Janeiro. He’s frightened he’ll end up like the countless others around him—troubled, violent or dead. But his saving grace is his photographer’s eye, through which the stories of several people who live in this forsaken “city” unfold. …

Wasn’t really sure what to expect with this one and it certainly surprised me on more then one occasion. It is a very brutal (and I do mean brutal) look at life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Movies like this always seem to make you appreciate all that you have.

Giving this one 4 stars.

Movie Review: The Notebook

Last night the wife and I watched acclaimed movie The Notebook. It was a very well done love story. The acting was superb and the story was very well written. It’s a tear-jerker, plan on your lady crying, a lot.
